The mobile genres people sleep on
Ask most people about mobile games and they picture puzzles or endless runners. That's a shame, because some of the most interesting stuff on phones lives in genres nobody talks about.
Management sims are one. A good tycoon or builder gives you the same satisfying growth loop as a big PC strategy game, in bite-sized chunks that fit a coffee break. They're quietly some of the best-paced games on the platform.
Atmospheric adventures are another. You don't need constant action to be engaging, and a slow, moody exploration game with headphones on can be more memorable than any twitchy shooter. These rarely top the charts, which is exactly why they get overlooked.
My advice is to step outside the top-ten lists once in a while. The charts reward what's easy to market, not always what's good. Some of my favorite recent games came from digging past the front page and giving a weird-looking genre a shot.
